Travel back in time with this re-enactment of the George Cross’ arrival in Marsa
The re-enactment is part of the ‘Il-Wasla tal-George Cross fil-Marsa’ event.

On 13th September 1942, the Maltese islands were presented with the prestigious George Cross in the then-damaged St George’s Square.

This honour was bestowed upon the brave Maltese people after they endured years upon years of air-raids from the Axis powers.

Following the George Cross’ arrival, it was taken around towns and villages all over the island for the general public to see.

In order to commemorate such a momentous occasion, the ‘Battlefront Living History Group’ is organising a re-enactment of the arrival of the George Cross in Marsa on 16th October.

The group is pulling out all the stops to make the event as realistic as possible…

In fact, the event will include police officers, sentries, Marsa scouts standing in for the Air Raid Precautions Unit, and even a guard of the King’s Own Malta Regiment.

The re-enactment will also be interactive, meaning that onlookers can even join in on the fun.

An exhibition by the name of ‘Was It Worth It?’ will also be opening its doors to the public on 16th October.

This exhibition will show visitors some never-before-seen artifacts shedding light on the Siege of Malta (1940 – 1942) and Operation Husky (1943).

Other activities happening on the day include static military vehicles exhibits, firing demonstrations, bomb disposal re-enactments, and historical tours around Marsa.

Air-raid shelters will be open to the public as well.

All of these activities form part of the event 'il-Wasla tal-George Cross fil-Marsa', organised by the Marsa Local Council, together with Battlefront Living History Group, with the support of the Ministry For The National Heritage, The Arts and The Local Government and the participation of several local groups.
