Transport Malta to introduce a new tow truck system that will tow obstructive cars
Transport Malta have issued a call for ‘standby tow trucks during rush hours’ for an initiative that aims to clear out roads from obstructive cars as quickly as possible on school days.
A Facebook post from Transport Malta stated that the Government entity is “requesting interested parties to apply for standby Towing Services to be provided during school days from Monday to Friday (excluding Public Holidays), or as will be directed by the Authority.”
Tow trucks will be made available as follows (or as otherwise indicated by Transport Malta):
1. Three tow trucks in the morning between 6.30am and 9.30am
2. One or two trucks in the afternoon between 3.30pm and 6.30pm
A representative of Transport Malta exclusively told us that “the areas where this will take place will be identified once school starts, especially in the south areas where major projects are currently being conducted,” referring to the Marsa project. The TM rep said that the areas could shift to central and northern parts of the island as necessary, and the service is expected to start around 20th September, once schools kick off the new scholastic year.
This project was also carried out last year, and was received positively. “Our main aim is to clear the roads as quickly as possible to minimise traffic congestion,” the rep said, who went on to explain how the system works. “We’ve got a control centre that sees traffic and sends out the trucks to particular locations to move the cars to a safer location.” The rep also explains that enforcement officers on motorbikes monitor traffic and see where the trucks need to be sent. A Freephone could also be potentially set up for drivers on the road to report any obstructed roads due to accidents or broken down vehicles.
Could this be another step towards traffic free roads?
