Threads of Faith: The Order of St John’s liturgical vestments on display at the Inquisitor’s Palace
The exhibition will be running until the end of July 2025.
A captivating exhibition titled ‘Threads of Faith – Liturgical Vestments of the Order of St John’ is now open to the public at the Inquisitor’s Palace and National Museum of Ethnography in Birgu, running until the end of July 2025.
Curated by Heritage Malta, this exhibition reveals the intricate artistry and profound spiritual heritage associated with the Order of St John, showcasing a rare collection of Roman Catholic liturgical vestments that date back to the late 15th century.
These vestments, including chasubles and dalmatics, were worn by clergy during religious ceremonies throughout the Order’s rule over the Maltese islands (1530-1798). Some of these garments, bearing the coats of arms and insignia of the Order’s Grand Masters, come from Heritage Malta’s National Textiles Collection and the St. Lawrence Collegiate Church in Birgu.
The collection spans from the 15th to the 17th century, displaying both the spiritual devotion and artistic prowess of the Order. Each piece, crafted from rich textiles such as velvet, damask, and brocade, is adorned with embroidery, braids, and, in some cases, precious jewels, highlighting the level of skill and dedication that went into their creation.
Visitors will trace the evolution of liturgical garments, observing how colours, patterns, and materials were thoughtfully selected to communicate reverence and artistic splendor.
The exhibition also includes rare liturgical paraments, such as chalice covers, burses, and altar frontals, offering a glimpse into the full ceremonial attire that once accompanied these vestments.
This unique display of history and spirituality is included in the admission ticket to the Inquisitor’s Palace, making it a must-visit for those interested in exploring the artistic and divine legacy left by the Order of St John on the Maltese islands.
