Travelling the world is a dream for many - one that involves an intense amount of planning (not to mention saving!) Meet Jordy and Martina, two locals who are doing just that, embarking on their trip around the world just yesterday. But theirs isn't just any trip!

Jordy and Martina are both doctors, and while already having been on incredible trips together, they've now dropped everything to travel the world and volunteer their medical services as they go. We couldn't wait to see them off, and find out more about their incredible journey and what’s in store.

Travelling across continents

“Our plan is to travel across three major continents with our backpacks, visiting several countries that we have always dreamt of visiting. Along the way we will also be stopping in certain areas to carry out voluntary work. We’ve been longing to do this for several years and have finally found the right time! We are planning to be on the road for at least 10 months. It could be more though... who knows?” Sounds like a blast!

Planning the route

Jordy and Martina’s journey kicked off yesterday with their first flight to Istanbul. But where are they heading? “Our journey starts in Africa, specifically in Cape Town, South Africa. From there we will be travelling up north to Namibia and then off to the eastern side of Africa."

"We haven’t planned much of our route from then on, but the idea is to go to South East Asia and finish off our journey in South America. We have already planned a basic route of the countries we want to visit, but we know that flexibility and adaptation are essential on such long trips. So, we’ll see where the road will take us!” they say.

So why did they decide to jet off on such a journey? “Because why not? We are both big travel enthusiasts and are extremely intrigued by different cultures and landscapes. Moreover, we always wanted to give back to the less fortunate communities through volunteering.” They say it’s been a dream of theirs, but never got round to it due to studies and career paths, until now!

Putting their careers on hold

“It is not easy to put our medical careers on hold to spend so many months away traveling and volunteering. We want to experience the world and all that it has to offer. We are lucky that we live on a beautiful island with stable jobs, tight knit families and amazing friends - but we know that there is so much more beyond that. We want to learn about different cultures, meet new people, taste a variety of cuisines, make unforgettable memories, get out of our comfort zones, give back to the poorer communities and appreciate life with all its wonders.”

“We hope that this experience will broaden our minds, educate us and help us grow individually and together to become better doctors and human beings,” they say.
