The Queen will address the UK & Commonwealth with historic special speech this weekend
It’s all going down on Sunday.
Buckingham Palace has confirmed, following speculation, that the Queen will be giving a historic fourth special speech due to the Coronavirus pandemic this Sunday, addressing the UK and the Commonwealth countries – one of which being Malta.
“On Sunday 5th April at 8pm (BST) Her Majesty The Queen will address the UK and the Commonwealth in a televised broadcast. As well as on television and radio, The Queen’s address will be shown on the Royal Family’s social media channels,” the Palace said in a statement.
This is the Queen’s fourth special address during her 68-year reign. The most recent one was given on 2002 ahead of the Queen mother’s funeral. The other two were addressed in 1997 after the death of Princess Diana and in 1991 when she spoke about the Gulf War.
“It is a question of when, not if. The value of an address by the Queen is that it is so rare — it’s a case of when is the optimum time to do it. The Queen wants to get it right,” a Palace source told Sunday Times newspaper.
