Sweet victory! Malta’s figolla ranked among the world’s best cookies by Taste Atlas
If you're craving something sweet to pair with your coffee, you might want to reach for that leftover Easter figolla, because it’s just earned a spot among the world’s best cookies! Taste Atlas, a renowned global food guide, recently released its list of the top 100 cookies from across the globe, and Malta’s beloved almond-filled treat made an impressive 15th place.
The rankings were determined based on user ratings on the popular food site, and Malta’s figolla earned a solid 4.1 rating. It’s no surprise, given the figolla's delicious combination of almonds, marzipan, and a delicate pastry – perfect for satisfying those sweet cravings.
While Argentina’s alfajores (Dulce de Leche sandwich cookies) took the top spot, other classic favourites like the American chocolate chip cookie and Dutch stroopwafel also ranked higher. However, Malta’s figolla beat out some globally loved cookies, including the elegant French macarons!
Taste Atlas describes the figolla as a ‘flat, marzipan-filled Maltese cookie’ and offers an interesting historical nugget of knowledge – figolli were originally made in the shape of fish, baskets, or women and symbolised fertility.
So next time you take a glorious bite of one, know that you’re not just snacking on a local favourite – it’s one of the best sweet treats in the world!
