SNEAK PEEK! A look into The New Victorians & Teatru Malta’s latest creation, VII
They’re taking us back to that fateful day in 1919

The New Victorians are back with a new performance and if it’s anything like the past ones, we’re in for a fantastic show! 2019 marks the centenary of one of Malta’s most infamous occurrences, and their upcoming piece, VII (Sette), in collaboration with Teatru Malta, is a modern retelling of the Sette Giugno story we’ve all grown up with.

Speaking to the sister duo, I get to know all the deets behind their latest performance and everything to expect. “When we were approached to create this work, we were excited to take on the challenge of bringing this story to life, portraying the various facets and characters that often get forgotten. For us, this was an opportunity not to be missed - to share our history in a relevant way with those who may not know as much as they’d like to about this event,” they say.

The piece will include a number of original songs by The New Victorians in both Maltese and English, as well as the involvement of national dance company ZfinMalta, who form part of a 20-person ensemble. Now, this is going to be one heck of a show! “To be entrusted to write and direct a project of this scale has meant the world, although it’s also meant months of non-stop work, which we are very grateful for.”

VII will be the first of its kind: a musical with live electronic music performed by the fun loving Maltese sister duo, in Maltese and English, with beautiful physicality brought to life by a full-time professional cast who will be dancing, singing and acting, in the historically rich Fort St Elmo.

“Collaborating with an international creative team has also aided us to grow and develop our work. Script writer Erin Carter is working hand in hand with Simon Bartolo to ensure the script is accurately trilingual yet understood by all. Set designer Romualdo Moretti has designed and helped us build a giant (nine metre!) ramp, representing Valletta's hills and streets.”

“The participation of ZfinMalta has elevated the performance to a new level. Luke Azzopardi’s costumes with material and props from Camilleri Paris Mode have also been a dream team to work with!” Listen out for the VII single Fight In Us on Maltese radio stations, out on all streaming platforms on 24th May.
