Friends, family and acquaintances were left reeling at the sudden death of 13-year-old Francesca Vella, with many taking to social media to express their sorrow at such tragic news.

St. Michael's, Francesca's school expressed great shock and sorrow in a heartfelt post on Facebook: "She will always be remembered for her diligence, sense of responsibility, and especially her kind heart while, while our own hearts ache and cry tears of sorrow," the post read.

An art and creativity group which Francesca used to frequent also paid tribute to the star student: "She was such a talented and bright young woman who always worked hard and produced amazing Art ! Our deepest condolences go out to all her family and friends. She will truly be missed."

Francesca fell ill while on a trip to Gozo and was transported to Mater Dei for suiveillance, where she passed away a few days later.

In a more tragic blow, it was revealed that Francesca was just weeks away from turning 14 in July.
