Residents rejoice! Pieta Parish Church set to welcome ‘sustainable’ roof garden
Self-sufficient and sustainable!

In an exemplary attempt to make Malta greener, the zuntier at Pieta’s Madonna ta’ Fatima Parish Church is set to be converted into a sustainable garden for the town’s residents to enjoy.

The project will see a number of trees and shrubs get planted in the area – although that’s not all!

Thanks to an investment of over €100,000, Pieta’s roof garden will also house an irrigation system, lightning fixtures, and water tanks that can store around 15,000 litres of rainwater.

The water tanks will be used to irrigate the garden’s trees and shrubs.

“These projects are giving back green open spaces to the community, which will serve as a place where citizens can enjoy their time with their families, thus improving the quality of life,” Environment Minister Aaron Farrugia said.

Pieta’s new green space will also serve as insulation, since it has the capacity to retain heat in winter and keep temperatures cooler in summer. This will help improve the church building’s energy conservation.

Do you plan on visiting the rooftop garden?
