Local marine biologist Alan Deidun took to social media to share quite a rare sight…
A beach in Marsaxlokk has been completely covered by a thick layer of seashells.
As weird as this all might look to the average passer-by, Alan was quick to deduce the cause of this phenomenon.
The biologist explained that the shells are "a result of the strong South-East (Xlokk) winds which pummelled the area in recent weeks and probably dislodged all form of burrowing creatures within the soft seabed of the embayment."
According to Alan, these shells are empty bivalves, a large class of molluscs known as pelecypods, including cockles and clams.
One commenter claimed that the washed-up clams had died a while ago, and the sea just brought them back up to the surface.
He attributed this to the dredging of the power station and the freeport.
What do you make of this?
