Listen up! Żibel’s new Tribe Bins make recycling marine plastics easier than ever across Malta & Gozo
The local environmental NGO Żibel has launched an incredibly simple and impactful initiative to make marine plastic recycling more accessible than ever before. Their latest project places designated plastic collection bins, known as Tribe Bins, in 10 key coastal and public areas across Malta and Gozo.
These bins are not your average disposal points. Each one is padlocked and comes with a QR code, which, once scanned, allows users to quickly log the plastic they’ve found – whether it’s from a solo beach cleanup or a spontaneous pick-up during a seaside walk or dive. Once logged, you’re provided with a passcode that unlocks the bin, and the plastic is securely dropped in, ready for Żibel’s team to collect and fully recycle.
This initiative is all about creating a culture of everyday environmental responsibility. Whether you’ve come across a stray bottle during a swim or organised a mini cleanup with friends, these bins are ready and waiting for your contribution.
You’ll spot these bins at these 10 locations:
- Royal Malta Yacht Club (Ta’ Xbiex)
- Manoel Island Marina (Ta’ Xbiex)
- Pembroke (near the reverse osmosis plant)
- Salina Nature Reserve
- Majjistral Park (Manikata)
- Marsaxlokk Bay
- Għar Lapsi
- Ċirkewwa
- Xemxija Bay
- Marsalforn Bay, Gozo
The bins are part of Żibel’s ongoing commitment to tackling Malta’s waste problem through community-led solutions, tech-friendly systems, and a whole lot of heart.
Tag Żibel in your clean-up photos or send them in, because every bottle, cap, or wrapper you remove from nature makes a difference.
Have you spotted any of these bins?
