Prof. Charmaine Gauci could really be in the running for the Gieh ir-Repubblika
Malta's Superintendent of Public Health Prof. Charmaine Gauci is to be nominated for a Ġieħ ir-Repubblika.
An honour bestowed on those who contribute greatly to the well-being of the Maltese, and also of the world, Opposition leader Dr Adrian Delia revealed his intention to nominate Prof. Gauci for the award through a Facebook post last night: "We will nominate Prof. Charmaine Gauci for the Ġieħ ir-Repubblika. Had it been up to the Nationalist Party, all frontliners in healthcare would be granted a special bonus for their heroic work carred out throughout the COVID-19 pandemic."

Lamenting this, Dr Delia continued that Prof. Gauci's nomination is: "...in the name of all frontliners in the health sector."
The Ġieħ ir-Repubblika is a prestigious award handed out to a maximum of three people every two years. Established in 1975, it's motto is: Għall-Ġid tal-Maltin a.k.a. For the Benefit of the Maltese. One of the most recent awardees was Simon Schembri, a police officer who lost his arm in an accident while carrying out his duties.
Do you think Prof. Gauci should receive the Ġieħ ir-Repubblika award?
