More measures will be lifted in the coming days.
During a live interview streamed on ONE TV, Prime Minister Robert Abela highlighted Malta's success at curbing COVID-19 and insisted there was no need for fear and suffering as the country heads towards a new normality.
"Waves are found in the sea, there's no need to strike up public fear of a second wave," the Prime Minister stressed, as he explained the government's stance on the matter. A second COVID-19 wave has been observed in many countries, with some reporting more deaths than the first wave. Malta has recorded 546 cases since the start of the pandemic, with around 50 reported this week alone. Of the total number of cases, 90 are active and six have died.
PM Abela also made reference to Malta's high percentage of recovered cases, where most had cured themselves from their own homes through the surveillance of health authorities. "Malta and Gozo are COVID-19 safe," the Prime Minister declared.
Addressing the measures planned to be lifted in the coming days, he continued that: "Measures need logic, coherency and consistency. We need decisions that make more sense," he said, adding that there was no reason not to reignite Malta's economy.
