Homeward bound! Turtles Polly Ċensa and Duka released into Maltese seas after successful rehabilitation
Malta’s turtle care efforts are paying off!

Francesca Vella

It’s been a strong summer for Malta’s turtle conservation efforts, with two more rescued turtles released into the wild today following successful rehabilitation. This news comes in just after the fourth turtle nest discovered in Gozo over the weekend.

The special release took place at Golden Bay, where the turtles, lovingly named ‘Polly Ċensa’ and ‘Duka’, following care and treatment at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Xrobb l-Għaġin.

Polly Ċensa, who weighs in at a solid 70kg, was rescued back in August 2022 after swallowing a fishing hook and line. Duka, on the other hand, was found last December with entanglements on both front flippers – thankfully, her injuries were less severe, and she made a speedier recovery.

This brings Malta’s released turtle count to five for 2025, with 15 more turtles currently undergoing rehab at the Xrobb l-Għaġin centre. The work is carried out thanks to the collaborative efforts of ERA, Ambjent Malta, and Nature Trust Malta.

If you happen to spot turtle activity on the beach (like a nesting turtle or hatchlings), don’t approach or disturb them. Instead, contact ERA on 2292 3500 or Nature Trust on 9999 9505.

Disturbing a turtle or its nest is a criminal offence, with fines ranging from €500 to €2,400 per egg. Once a nest is discovered, authorities quickly step in to protect it with an emergency conservation order and round-the-clock volunteer surveillance.

Well done to all the hardworking individuals who help keep these beautiful creatures safe!
