Something special is blooming in Floriana! Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) has officially set a new national record – growing the tallest sunflower in Malta, standing at a stunning 3.6 metres tall.
The impressive flower towers over the community garden lovingly known as The Giving Garden, a green space FoEM created in 2018 after transforming an abandoned British-era building into a thriving hub for nature lovers, gardeners, and pollinators alike.
Michelangelo Galea, Community Garden and Environmental Facilities Coordinator at FoEM shared his joy at this achievement: ‘This sunflower is a testament to what a few seeds, healthy soil, and community care can grow. It shows that with proper attention to organic practices, our plants can reach new heights.’
Located in the heart of Floriana, the Giving Garden is a place where people come together to learn how to grow their own herbs, fruits, vegetables, and indigenous plants using organic, nature-friendly methods.
Throughout the cooler months, Michelangelo leads workshops on everything from permaculture to beekeeping, and the NGO frequently partners with local businesses to introduce urban gardening as part of their team-building initiatives. These hands-on sessions are not only educational but empowering, giving people the confidence to grow their own food and contribute to greener spaces across Malta.
This sunflower success comes at a significant time, as Friends of the Earth Malta marks its 40th anniversary this year. The record-breaking bloom perfectly captures the NGO’s mission: fostering a love for local food, promoting biodiversity, and championing sustainability through community-driven action.
The sunflower also shines a light – literally and figuratively – on the role of pollinators and the importance of fresh, locally grown produce in Malta’s food ecosystem.
