Monthly opening! Explore history at the White Tower open day in Mellieħa this Sunday
This Sunday, the historic White Tower in Mellieħa will open its doors to the public for a special open day between 5pm and 9pm. Visitors are invited to step inside one of Malta’s most iconic coastal watchtowers and discover its fascinating past while enjoying breathtaking views over Mellieħa Bay and the surrounding coastline.
The White Tower, built in 1658 during the reign of Grand Master Martin de Redin, was one of the many coastal watchtowers constructed by the Knights of St John to strengthen Malta’s defences against Ottoman and pirate raids.
It replaced an earlier medieval watch post and has long served as a sentinel over the northern shores. In later years, it was adapted by the British for military use during World War II.
Today, the tower is a restored heritage site, managed with the support of Din l-Art Ħelwa, and stands as a proud reminder of Malta’s coastal defence system. The open day offers a unique opportunity to explore its interior, learn about its layered history, and connect with Malta’s rich cultural heritage.
Entrance is free, making this a perfect evening outing for families, history enthusiasts, and anyone wishing to experience a landmark steeped in history.
