Four brave guys and one incredible woman will be swimming 35km around Gozo on Saturday 29th June to support the organisation Wave of Change and raise awareness about the environmental issues that Malta is currently facing, primarily plastic waste dumped into the sea.

But who are these guys (& girl)? Meet the 5 incredible swimmers of #WaveofChange!

1. Neil Agius

33-year-old swimming coach, Olympian and record-breaker, Neil has been swimming competitively for the past 22 years. He’s one of the founders of the Wave of Change movement, which he believes everyone can be part of. Because after all, not all heroes wear capes!

2. Hannah Pace

The 26-year-old triathlete, Ironman and National champion has raced all over the globe representing Malta in major events and competitions. “I want to be part of the change and hope to inspire people to do their part. You don’t need to do anything big, it’s the little things that count!” she said on Facebook. Preach it, sister!

3. Steven Grech

Steven is a 39-year-old dad, ex-waterpolo player and digital nomad. By the age of 10, Steve was playing for the Exiles Sports Club under 16s and eventually the first team, retiring at 22! His love for the sea and the movement lit the spark to challenge himself with this swim.

4. Andrew Azzopardi

A 38-year-old dad to two boys, Andrew is an ex-triathlete and wine-geek by profession. Passionate about the deep blue, Andrew holds fond memories of snorkelling adventures with his dad, but feels that since his snorkelling days, the amount of sea-life has reduced drastically. “It is now up to us to save what’s left of our seas and I think we can, but we must act fast – our kids will thank us for it,” he says on Facebook.

5. Richard Zerafa

Last but not least, Richard Zerafa will also be swimming around Gozo. The 35-year-old dad of two began being coached by Neil four years ago, and well, the rest is history. He remembers a time when sea life was abundant and most of his days were spent underwater. Today, sea life is infested with garbage and underwater creatures have reduced immensely. He wishes for his children to enjoy the same sea he did when he was younger.

And it’s not their first rodeo. Neil Agius and Richard Zerafa, together with Gilbert Bartolo, swam 70km around Malta last year. Damn. We're looking forward to seeing how this all turns out.

Just keep swimming! (Best of luck to the whole team.)
