Happy feast day! Today Malta has the double the celebrations to enjoy as we’re not only celebrating International Worker’s Day 'to promote solidarity amongst workers and a healthier working environment' but the island is also celebrating 22 years since joining the EU. And on top of these, it’s also a public holiday!

Viva San Guzepp!

Birkirkara also celebrates the feast of St Joseph the Worker and is decked out at its very best with activities and traditional customs lined up.

Msida’s Memorial

You can make a little cultural stop and visit the Worker’s Memorial in Msida which is one of the masterpieces created by renowned Maltese sculptor Anton Agius. It was erected by the General Workers’ Union in 1980.

22 years of being in the EU

On 1st May 2004, Malta officially became a member of the European Union. This followed a nationwide referendum held on 8th March 2003 which resulted in 54 per cent in favour. It would take another four years for the islands to change its currency from the Maltese Lira to the Euro which became the official currency on 1st January 2008.

What will you be doing today?

1st May 2026
