Meet Rocco: the Maltese kid with Spina Bifida studying to become the next master chef
He’s had to overcome some challenges

If you dream it, you can achieve it! Meet Rocco, the kid with a big heart and a passion for cooking. However, Rocco has had extra challenges thrown his way, having been born with a condition known as Spina Bifida. We spoke to his mum, Vickylynne, who told us all about her son’s aspirations and the challenges he’s had to overcome.

“Ever since he was a little kid, I didn’t put him in a bubble. I pushed him and encouraged him to overcome any challenges he may face,” his proud mama says.

So, where did his love for cooking come about? “In secondary school he chose home economics, and his passion continued to evolve as well as finding a love for art.” He also takes after his grandad and older brother, who are both chefs. So guess you could say it runs in the family!

“Rocco is a quiet kid and has a big heart. Although his life is full of challenges, he doesn’t give up and is ready to make his dream a reality,” she says. He passed all his exams and was just accepted into ITS, starting his journey to becoming a chef. Congrats, kid! It’s sure to be another challenge for him, but he’s ready to kick butt!

Vickylynne says he’s a very modest person. “He never praises his own work, but I constantly tell him he’s doing a great job. He needs a push and encouragement most of the time.” He's even got his own Facebook page to showcase his work, and judging by his creations, he'll make a fine chef one day!

Vickylynne had one thing to say to other kids like Rocco and their parents. “Our message is that special needs children are no less than others, and it’s amazing to see what they can achieve in life once given the chance.”

We couldn't agree more. Keep rocking, Rocco!
