Get ready for a rhythmic celebration of Maltese heritage as the Ritmu Roots Festival returns this May, bringing back music, tradition, and Mediterranean soul to Floriana and Valletta from 21st to 24th May.
This four-day festival dives deep into Malta’s musical roots, with performances, cultural encounters, and hands-on experiences that celebrate not only local traditions but those of our Mediterranean neighbours.
At the heart of Ritmu Roots lies the iconic Argotti Gardens in Floriana, a space that’s long echoed with the sounds of għana (traditional Maltese folk singing). The venue will host two evenings under the stars, celebrating the beauty of spontaneous ‘spirtu pront’ duels, traditional guitars, and the timeless art of local storytelling through song.
The festival also opens its arms to international performers who bring their own traditions to Malta’s shores. This year’s lineup includes:
- Pliri Ntaxei – Greek masters of Rebetiko, a deeply expressive genre often called the ‘blues of Greece’.
- Tarta Relena – A Spanish duo blending ancient Mediterranean songs with modern, experimental soundscapes.
Plenty of other spots across Floriana and Valletta will be hosting their own celebrations – take a look at the whole programme here.
Over in Valletta, for instance, The Splendid will host a unique audiovisual experience curated by French filmmaker Vincent Moon. Known for capturing unseen musical rituals across the globe, Vincent’s presentation offers a powerful journey through global music and spiritual expression, using film to evoke the universal language of sound.
Back in Floriana, the popular hangout Balzunetta will be transformed into a hub of free cultural fun, with live għana performances, spontaneous lyrical duels, and even the chance to try your hand at a game of boċċi, Malta’s much-loved traditional sport.
Will you be joining the rhythmic fun this year?
