Malta’s National War Museum turns 50 this June! Here’s how you can celebrate this historic milestone
Half a century of stories, artefacts, and national pride.
Mark your calendars for Sunday, 1st June, as Fort St Elmo opens its gates for a special celebration marking 50 years of the National War Museum – and you’re invited to be part of the festivities!
Rather than cake and candles, Heritage Malta has put together a full day of exciting events, exhibitions, and immersive experiences – and the best part? Admission is completely free!
The anniversary celebration promises something for everyone, whether you're a history buff, a family with kids, or simply looking for a different day out in Valletta.

For the first time in decades, the George Cross medal – a treasured centrepiece of the museum – will be displayed alongside the original letter from King George VI, kindly loaned by the National Library of Malta for this one-day-only event.
Witness history come to life with dramatic re-enactments from the Malta Command WWII Living History Group and the Historical Re-enactment Group of Malta, giving visitors an authentic taste of life during wartime.
Engage with hands-on experiences courtesy of Heritage Malta’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit, Diagnostic Science Laboratories, and the Education Department – ideal for curious minds of all ages.
Be among the first to explore a brand-new immersive installation focused on the legendary Bofors Light Anti-Aircraft gun and its critical role in Malta’s wartime defence.
Weather permitting, the skies above Fort St Elmo will come alive with a Piper J-3 Cub aircraft flyover – a thrilling visual treat that’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
Don’t miss this chance to celebrate one of Malta’s most iconic museums in style – whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, you’ll undoubtedly discover something new!
