The worlds first deep underwater archaeological park has just been inaugurated. The park, found on a seabed site off Xlendi in Gozo, is spread over an area of 67,000 square metres and found 105metres deep into the water!
The archaeological site, which is full of Punic remains dating back to 2,300 years ago, was first discovered in 1993 and lies at 105 metres below sea level.
The exciting news of the opening of the park was first announced during a conference titled ‘Lungomare Mediterraneo/Submerged testimonies of the modern Europe’.
For the past two years, Heritage Malta together with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage have been recording the Punic archaeological site in detail so all the historic remains can be enjoyed and appreciated by all the public.
In order for underwater cultural heritage to be accessible for everyone, an online museum was launched and can be accessed through here.Through this website, visitors can explore an additional 20 underwater sites in 3D from the comfort of their homes.
