Locked, loaded & looking good! Castille’s cannons reinstalled in Valletta after restoration
A familiar sight has returned to Castille Square in Valletta!

Francesca Vella

Early this morning, Heritage Malta successfully reinstated the iconic 18th-century cannons that flank the majestic Auberge de Castille, following months of meticulous restoration and conservation works.

The project, which began in April, aimed to combat years of wear and tear caused by weather exposure and occasional damage from visitors. Thanks to the expert intervention, the historic cannons have not only been preserved but are now in a better state than ever before.

These cannons, which once symbolised power and defence, now stand proudly once more, offering both locals and tourists a reminder of Malta’s military and architectural heritage.

Next time you're in the capital, be sure to pass by Castille Square and take in these beautifully restored artefacts, now back in their rightful place of honour.

Have you seen the revamped cannons yet?
