Early morning journey! Heritage Malta kicks off restoration of Castille’s historic cannons
Out with the old, in with the restored!

In the early hours of this morning, an unusual scene unfolded outside the Auberge de Castille in Valletta, as a delicate operation took place to remove the two iconic cannons stationed at the entrance. The operation, which saw the cannons and their carriages carefully lifted and transported, is part of a crucial restoration project. The historical pieces are being taken to Heritage Malta’s workshops in Bighi, where they will undergo necessary conservation work before being re-exposed to the elements and public view, and touch!

For much of the 20th century, the cannons outside Castille were made of bronze. However, the cannons had been suffering from significant wear and tear over time due to exposure to the harsh environment and the constant handling by visitors. The decision was made to replace them with new materials to ensure their preservation.

In 2007, Heritage Malta embarked on a large-scale operation across Malta and Gozo to replace the old bronze cannons. As part of the restoration at Castille, the bronze pieces were swapped out for iron cannons dating back to the 18th century, the era of the Knights of St John.

The carriages supporting these cannons, which are of 18th-19th century British design, were also part of the restoration. Now, after 18 years, the time has come for further maintenance to preserve both the cannons and their historic carriages.

Once the restoration is completed, the cannons will once again stand proudly at the entrance of Castille, ready to face the elements – and the many visitors who come to admire them, and possibly use them as props in their travel photos!

Have you ever snapped a pic with the iconic cannons outside Castille?
