This is probably the coolest thing to close an airport runway for! Over the weekend, two Maltese Ryanair pilots got hitched and included a private air display, closing the airport’s main runway for 40 minutes.
Reportedly, no air traffic was disrupted since the airport’s other runway was still in operation during the 40 minute display. However, many couldn’t believe that such an event was organised, sparking mixed opinions from locals.
“So, we cannot have a national airshow because of parking issues but a closed runway for a private event is perfectly fine!” said one Facebook user on Times of Malta's post on the matter, taking a jab at the airshow cancellations. Others have also brought up the cancellation of the annual aviation show for the past two consecutive years, one of which could attract tonnes of tourists, calling it “unbelievable double standards.”
Other users didn’t seem to have a problem with it. “Only a 40-minute closure? The runway used to be closed for whole days to cater for events,” he says. Many people have also noted that “not one flight was affected” since the other runway was open, saying it was all well and good and simply wished the happy couple the best.
