The much-awaited show was an annual event in Malta's calendar but has unfortunately been cancelled twice during the past two years. The event is run by the Malta Aviation Society, an NGO that was founded back in 1971 that strives to foster a love for aviation in Malta.

The first Malta International Airshow was held in 1993 every year until 2017. In a Facebook post, the Society posted a statement on the situation saying that, “Although official discussions with the relevant authorities were held for an aerial event in 2018, such discussions failed to find a solution to the impasse.”

Former Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech stated that, “This is a niche that affects many Maltese aviation enthusiasts, families who await this appointment to take their children to watch the show and attracts many high-quality tourists to our country.” Zammit Dimech also expressed that it’s a pity for such a show to be cancelled.
