Alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins have just shared the newest song from upcoming album Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun. And in an unexpected nod to our fair island’s history, it’s called Knights of Malta!
With 30 million albums sold worldwide, the band is considered one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands of the 1990s, and while there doesn’t seem to be any connection or reference to Malta or our famed Knights in the song itself, we’re guessing its title will definitely spawn a Google search or two among fans – most of which are likely not to have heard about this tiny gem in the Med!
Prior to the song’s release, forum discussions by fans speculated about the Malta connection, and indeed, if there would even be one, with one fan predicting “Billy likes the sound of certain phrases, and Knights of Malta is right up his alley” – we guess that explains it, then!
The Pumpkins’ new album features founding members Billy Corgan, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin, and longtime guitarist Jeff Schroeder all together for the first time in 18 years, so fans are bound to be excited.
