South
A beautiful rocky beach on the edge of the peninsula facing the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, this beautiful bay is often forgotten in favour of the more famous Peter's Pool. It is just as attractive and more peaceful than the neighbouring beach.
Indeed, despite being remotely located far from any public services, many tourists make the effort to visit this rocky beach due to its well-earned reputation. The seas are deep and clear, and the surrounding coast offers great sunbathing and diving. Best to visit during the week in summer to avoid the crowds of locals.
North
Tucked away down a long winding slope, past a growth of bamboo and down some clay hills, the golden sands and clear waters of this north-facing beach are definitely worth the effort.
It is also a long stretch to reach this pebble beach on the west of the island. Magnificent sheer-dropping cliffs sink into the deep water and beneath the waves, several rocks are home to abundant marine life - take your snorkelling gear!
Gozo
A pretty protected bay at the end of a valley, the road getting here is a sight-seeing trip in itself. The winding deep valley and the coast surrounding the bay offer plenty of photo opportunities. This is the location of the movie By The Sea, starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
A tiny pebble beach nestled deep where a valley meets the sea, this spectacular place is truly unique. Explore the surrounding area to discover a sea-cave and salt pans carved into the coast.
So off you go, but bear in mind that no public services reach most of these places, so you'll need to rent a vehicle or prepare yourself for a long walk - make sure you avoid the hottest hours of the day to avoid strain. Many of these beaches require a trek even from any roads and offer no facilities, so always be sure to take enough water, a snack, hat, sunscreen and ideally something to make some shade. Enjoy your swimming adventure!
