Historic preservation! Marsaxlokk's Palazzo Marnisi granted Grade 1 protection as Cultural Heritage
The Superintendence of Cultural Heritage has announced that the Planning Authority has granted Grade 1 protection to the historic Palazzo Marnisi in Marsaxlokk, the highest level of cultural heritage protection. This decision follows an unfortunate period of vandalism the building faced in recent years.
In response, the Superintendence issued a Conservation & Protection Order for the palazzo back in January, and in February, it was added to the National Inventory. This inclusion highlights its significance and provides an essential layer of protection deserving of such a culturally valuable site.
Built in 1650 by Captain Giacomo Testaferrata de Robertis, Palazzo Marnisi features a chapel dedicated to St Dominic and boasts stunning architectural elements from its era, including sculpted benches, balustrades, and classical columns that enhance its grandeur.
The Superintendence commends the increasing awareness and efforts to protect our cultural heritage, emphasising that this decision further reinforces the palazzo’s intrinsic value and ensures the robust protection it truly deserves.
