It's love at first poke!

23-year-old body piercer and tattoo artist Monica Monique Farrugia is getting a great reputation in Malta for her "hand-poked" tattoos, and has even started to travel to European cities for her trade! As the first and only professional hand-poke tattoo artist on the island, we wanted to find out more about the practise from Monica Monique herself. Here's what she had to share with GuideMeMalta!

We love your cool designs! Tell us, what exactly is a hand-poked tattoo and how is it different from a normal tattoo?

"Hand-poked tattoos are faster-healing but they involve a longer process of tattooing. It's a very intimate method and often involves a lot of conversation and a lot of creative freedom. I find it very important to work with each individual person regarding their designs. Clients often tell me their budget and I fit the artwork to match that."

How did you get into tattooing and body modification?

"I started off with piercing when I was 17. I love the creativity in that alone! I've been drawing since forever and started tattooing at 21. Hand-poked tattoos are a new thing in Malta but gaining popularity abroad. It's basically just the needle and ink without the machine - just like a pen really. I didn't find machine tattooing as satisfying and enjoyable as holding the bare needle. I went to Amsterdam to learn the trade."

How would you describe your working style?

"I love geometric patterns and floral designs and my speciality is mandalas. I feel they are timeless! At the moment, the ear pokes are a big hit. I try to make each design flow and fit properly with the body. I like to keep the experience fun and exciting for the person getting tattooed who is usually very excited and looking forward to their appointment!"

What are your clientele like?

"Clients usually find out about my work through social media. Instagram is great for displaying past works and people get excited about having their piercings and tattoos featured on the page!"

Why are tattoos important to people, in your opinion?

"We do not get to choose the body we have been given in this world so I like to help others decorate their bodies to show the world who they really are. I like to make people feel more comfortable in their skin and be able to make a pierce of art that makes them feel more whole, beautiful and strong."

Thanks Monica Monique and keep up the great work!
