On the 13th of June, as part of the European Archaeology Days 2025, Salina Bay will come alive with history and discovery during a special Open Day from 10:00am to 2:00pm.
Organised by Heritage Malta’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit in collaboration with the University of Malta’s Maritime Archaeology Programme, this unique event invites the public to explore the secrets of Malta’s underwater past.
Visitors will get a rare glimpse into an active underwater excavation site, guided by professional archaeologists uncovering centuries-old maritime stories beneath the waves. Adventurous attendees can snorkel over the excavation site in small groups (bring your own snorkelling gear!), offering a first-hand experience of underwater archaeology in action.
Prefer to stay dry? No problem. Onshore activities include an immersive 360° virtual dive through the Dive into History experience, as well as hands-on sessions with real artefacts discovered beneath the sea. These engaging activities bring Malta’s maritime legacy to life for visitors of all ages.
Free and open to the public, this event is a perfect opportunity to celebrate Europe’s rich archaeological heritage in a dynamic and interactive way. The meeting point for all attendees is at Salina Bay - don’t forget to check the map for directions.
Whether you’re exploring under the sea or from the shoreline, the Salina Bay Open Day promises a memorable journey into the depths of Malta’s cultural heritage.
