Did you know that David Bowie performed in Malta before he became an international superstar?
A musical legend that started out right here in Malta!

David Bowie is arguably one of the most influential musicians of the 20th and 21st century but did you know he competed at the 1969 Malta International Song Festival before he became famous?

Before he released the classic song ‘Space Oddity’ in 1969, Bowie was struggling jumping from one band to the next and releasing singles and albums that were not charting in the UK.

It just so happens that he came to Malta in 1969, just two weeks after the renowned ‘Space Oddity’ was released and competed in the Malta International Song Festival, held at the Hilton.

He ended up finding success here in Malta as he won the best-produced record at the festival. This was the first award, out of the many that the legendary musician won in his life!

Bowie ended up placing second overall with his song, ‘When I Live My Dream’ but he also stepped up to perform a Maltese song, a song which he wrote the English lyrics for.

Just like many foreigners that come to Malta, Bowie was shocked by the Maltese heat. He even sent a telegram to his soon to be wife saying, “Bloody Hot Love Bowie”.

It’s clear that Bowie loved performing as he took every opportunity he could get and even went on to put up a show for the crew of the US navy aircraft carrier, the Saratoga while they were docked at the Valletta harbour.

David Bowie passed away six years ago after a battle with a cancer and he has undoubtably left an incredible legacy that will be remembered for many generations to come.
