Local authorities have come under fire in recent months and years for the number of trees being uprooted as a result of infrastructure and road widening projects across the islands. 

And now, Maltese independent Green politician Arnold Cassola has pointed out another incident that points to the powers that be’s seeming disregard of trees.

In a post shared on social media earlier today, photos taken in Valletta appear to show the sad fate of one particular tree, with concrete poured all the way around its trunk, restricting access to water.

The photos have drawn the ire of several members of the public – and with good reason! 

One can only hope that this was done in error, and the authorities will rectify the situation – and save the poor tree – sooner rather than later.
