Environmental activist Cami Appelgren is speaking out once again about the importance of waste separation in light of recent reports that the recycling plant in Maghtab has been out of order since July.

The issue at Maghtab

The news spread yesterday as the matter was discussed in Parliament, revealing that the Malta North plant has been out of action since July. Consequently, the contents of the grey bags were being mixed with the mixed domestic waste, prompting locals to feel that they have been separating recyclable waste for nothing.

Enviro activist Cami Appelgren jumps in

Learning of the news, Cami took to Facebook this morning to share why it is of utmost importance to keep separating waste, sharing her personal experience with her kids. “They are, what I would consider, very environmentally aware. They see solutions and are ready to sacrifice convenience for the well-being of the commons and a healthy earth,” she writes, saying that the first thing everyone can teach their kids is to recycle and reduce. As simple as that.

“I can certainly say that by recycling as a kid in the 90s, it played a massive role in forming my mindset to feel an obligation to care. And not ONLY care about recycling but far beyond that, to care about the earth as a whole.”

Cami’s plea to locals

“I ask you all to continue to separate. That action goes beyond Wasteserv, although disheartening to read the news,” she admits.

“No matter how others are behaving, we should all #BeTheChange we wish to see. No matter what happens to the waste, we need to keep on doing what we believe is right. No matter what they say, we should stand by our values and not stoop to their level. So please, keep on reducing, reusing and recycling. Nothing you do is useless. But see this is a lesson that reducing your waste by being an aware consumer is the only safe way forward.”

It might be that you don’t see the ripple effect taking off in other ways based on your positive action... don’t underestimate it! Be a good role model - no matter what. Teach [your children] INTEGRITY. To always do good even if others don’t.”
