What is the thing you miss most about Malta when you’re away?

Instinctively, I would tell you the sea, the skyline and the sunsets. But more practically, I would say I miss the fact that in a day I can do so many things, which would include time at home, time at work, time for a quick workout and probably even an evening event.

What is your favourite…

Bar or watering hole & your usual order: I enjoy discovering recommended restaurants and wine bars with my husband, which makes for an enjoyable and relaxing evening, although I do have a few go-to favourites. I love trying different cuisines and fine red wine, and every time we go out, we make it a point to try new dishes and wines.

Local dish: Fresh fish or imqarrun il-forn (baked macaroni)

Beach or swimming spot: Golden bay or, even better and more comfortable, Merkanti, Hilton Malta.

Place for a walk: Dingli Cliffs.

Nightlife spot: Mdina, Valletta or simply enjoying a drink with the locals at a village piazza in Gozo.

Family tradition: We love Christmas time, so whether we’re in Malta or England (my husband is British so we spend a few days there around Christmas time every year), we listen to carols, attend Christmas markets and midnight mass, and enjoy a number of Father Christmas-related activities.

Maltese word: U ejja!

Festa food: Nothing, unless there are imqaret (date cakes), in which case I’m sold.

Local smell: Fresh grass after rain.

Town/village: Mgarr.

Describe your ideal day spent in Malta.

Sunrise by the shore somewhere along the east coast like Bahar ic-caghaq while doing yoga, then a healthy, homemade juice for breakfast followed by shopping for organic vegetables and having a chat with the locals to learn a thing or two whilst enjoying a slower, more relaxed pace. Taking the kids to an animal farm and spending time with them hiking in remote areas. Then a siesta… I think this should be a must! Finally, cooking dinner and enjoying playtime and relaxation with the children, then out for dinner with my husband!

What do you like in your hobza?

Tuna, olives, kunserva, extra virgin olive oil, lettuce and tomatoes.

What is the one tip you’d give to a visitor?

Mingle with the locals.

Either or…

Irkotta or pizelli? Irkotta
Malta or Gozo? Gozo
Summer or winter? Winter
