This Saturday 13th September, the heart of Siġġiewi will come alive as Pjazza San Nikola fills with tradition, food, music, and culture for Festa Għeneb fis-Siġġiewi – the annual celebration of the grape harvest and the village’s rich winemaking heritage. Festivities kick off from 6pm onwards, promising an evening packed with activities for all ages.
At the centre of the festival is the Grape Exhibition, showcasing a variety of grapes cultivated in the fertile fields of Siġġiewi, along with a display of agricultural machinery. Visitors can also enjoy a homemade wine competition, wine-tasting sessions, and delicious traditional Maltese food pairings, offering a true feast for the senses.
Adding a unique twist, ‘Fil-Kċina mas-Sindku’ will see the Mayor of Siġġiewi team up with children from the Local Children’s Council and special guests for a live cooking demonstration featuring seasonal local ingredients.
Festa Għeneb also shines a spotlight on Siġġiewi’s spiritual and historical roots. A special church exhibition, ‘Frott il-Fidi’, will have on display some rare 17th-century religious vestments tied to the Order of the Knights of Malta, who were instrumental in developing viticulture in the area.
This year’s edition also embraces international cultural exchange. Visitors can discover artisanal products from Sicily and Spain, sample regional wines, admire a baroque parade inspired by Noto in Sicily, and enjoy a unique salt design exhibition presented by the renowned Infiorata di Noto organisation.
Beyond grapes and wine, the square will be buzzing with food stalls, a crafts market, and a dedicated children’s area filled with fun activities. Two separate entertainment zones will keep the atmosphere lively throughout the evening: one offering a mix of contemporary performances, the other celebrating Maltese folk traditions with għana and live music.
