Fireworks have long been one of the highlights of any village feast, and reflect the passion of many a skilled workman to put up such a spectacle on an annual basis.
However, rising concerns regarding the chemicals used and their effects on the population have swamped the celebrations in recent years. Many view the tradition as unnecessary pollution, and several believe the burnt-out remnants of fireworks find their way into Maltese fields and consequently contaminate local food and water supplies.
Now, a Facebooks user’s idea to bypass these anxieties and replace fireworks with a similarly visual show has garnered a slew of reactions – and divided the community in the process.
The video, which depicts 100 lit-up drones executing a programmed performance in the sky is an undeniable visual stunner, but few commentators fully approved of the idea.
Many upheld the belief that pyrotechnics, defined as the art of working with fire, was just that, an art, while robotics and programming simply cannot compare to the real thing.
