Chadwick Lakes is one of Malta’s most loved natural retreats, especially popular with families after a good spell of rain, when the valley comes alive with flowing water and lush greenery.
Located close to the Rabat area, this picturesque area offers a peaceful escape from urban life while remaining deeply connected to the island’s history.
The site is named after Sir Osbert Chadwick, the British engineer who, in the 19th century, designed a series of dams to capture precious rainwater and manage flooding. However, the valley’s story stretches back even further.
Originally known as Wied il-Qlejgħa, it is mentioned in a notarial document dating back to 1488, highlighting its long-standing importance to local agriculture and community life.
In recent years, extensive rehabilitation works have breathed new life into Chadwick Lakes. The restored landscape is now safer, more accessible, and better protected for future generations.
A newly developed 2km walking trail through the upper valley allows visitors to explore the area while enjoying its natural beauty.
