Carmel Serracino, astute Academic, Classicist and Faculty of Arts member at the University of Malta, steps into a new realm as he showcases his first solo exhibition, ‘Across the Harbour’.

Across the Harbour

Born and raised in Bormla, where he still resides, the Harbour area holds a special place in his heart. In fact, this exhibition is dedicated to the Grand Harbour in general, and Bormla and the towns around it in particular.

Having only recently found the opportunity to dedicate more of his time to painting, Serracino has rekindled his love for watercolour painting, an unforgiving medium that allows him to adequately capture the desired mood and atmosphere in his works.

Across the Harbour

As he experiments with water, colour, and different paper types, such scrutiny has led him to take risks with the watercolour medium and after a lot of practice, he has found a style that allows him to express himself while maintaining a fidelity to nature. This does not mean that he slavishly includes every detail that he sees before him.

Land and streetscapes - that come alive through the delicate strokes of Serracino's brush - are freshly executed and are even spontaneous in parts. In fact, in this exhibition, one can see a seamless blend of works that were painted en plein air and others that were conceived entirely in the studio.

Across the Harbour

There is no denying a profound connection with the subject, be it fortifications, rooftops, boats, or a gathering of people. And this comes with a strong sense of belonging.

The Grand Harbour serves as a backdrop to this artistic exploration. The interplay of light and shadow on the water's surface, the proud silhouettes of historic fortifications, and the timeless charm of Cottonera's skyline do not fail to feature.

Serracino has managed to weave a visual tapestry that pays homage to the rich history, architectural marvels, and maritime splendour of this enchanting locale and its environs, including Senglea, Birgu, as well as Kalkara. The exhibition promises to be a sensory journey through the heart of Cottonera, capturing the spirit of the city through the delicate strokes of watercolour.

Serracino presents the Cottonera area as one of Malta's hidden gems, showcasing iconic landmarks, narrow winding streets, and the churches that have witnessed centuries of history unfold. Through Serracino's watercolours, each piece evokes the essence of the area’s character.

Being an academic, Serracino allows an introspection that allows him to choose the right composition. This exhibition is a celebration of Serracino’s journey so far, a visual odyssey through landscapes that transcend time and space.

The Cottonera area has been a constant source of inspiration for Serracino. Its layers of history and the ever-present connection to the sea provide endless possibilities for an artist. Through this exhibition, he hopes to share his love for Cottonera and convey the beauty that lies in its streets, architecture, and the grandeur of the Grand Harbour.

The exhibition is being curated by Dr Charlene Vella and is open throughout January 2024 at the Palm Court Lounge, The Phoenicia Malta.
