Open weekend! Step back in time and dive into history at the Xlendi Tower this August
It’s all happening on the 16th and 17th of August.
The historic Xlendi Tower on Gozo’s scenic south-west coast will open its doors to the public on 16th and 17th August for a unique open weekend, blending centuries of cultural heritage with cutting-edge virtual exploration.
Organised by the Munxar Local Council in collaboration with Heritage Malta’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit, the event invites visitors to experience both the storied past of one of Gozo’s oldest coastal watchtowers and the hidden wonders beneath the sea.
Guests can wander through the tower, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Xlendi Bay, and delve into Malta’s maritime legacy through a special Virtual Reality (VR) experience. This immersive journey offers a virtual dive into the Xlendi Underwater Archaeological Park and the renowned Phoenician Shipwreck, dating back to the 7th century BC.
Inside the tower, visitors will also find a fascinating display of underwater artefacts, providing tangible links to ancient trade, seafaring, and life beneath the waves.
Located just offshore, the Xlendi Underwater Archaeological Park is the world’s first deep-water archaeological park open to divers, launched in 2023 with support from the Malta Airport Foundation.
The Xlendi Tower will be open from 09:00 to 12:00 and 13:30 to 16:00 on both days. Entrance is free and no booking is required, making this an ideal opportunity for families, history buffs, and curious explorers alike to connect with Gozo’s rich cultural and underwater heritage.
Don't miss this chance to uncover the stories above and below the surface at one of Gozo’s most iconic landmarks.
