Cruise into history! Set sail on a one-of-a-kind Filfla & Grand Harbour cruise this August
History, nature, and sea views collide next month with the opportunity to explore two of Malta’s most fascinating maritime sites – the mysterious islet of Filfla and the majestic Grand Harbour – thanks to Heritage Malta’s Filfla–Grand Harbour cruise, taking place on Sunday 17th August.
Departing from Sliema Ferries at 10 AM sharp, this full-day boat tour brings seaside storytelling, natural beauty and historical insight, all set against Malta’s stunning eastern and southern coastlines.
This tiny, uninhabited islet may be out of bounds, but during this cruise, you’ll get close enough to uncover its secrets. Learn about how Filfla was formed, the meaning behind its name, its history as a target during military training, and its past connections with pirates. Today, Filfla is a protected natural reserve, home to unique creatures and plants, and if you're lucky, you might even spot seabirds, turtles or dolphins during your journey.
Although no landing or swimming is allowed around Filfla, the experience offers a rare chance to observe it up close and learn why this rocky outcrop holds such a powerful mystique.
After Filfla, the tour heads north to the iconic Grand Harbour, a natural gem that has served as a strategic stronghold for millennia – from the Neolithic era to the Phoenicians, the Knights of St John, and the British Empire.
Enjoy panoramic views of its fortified cities, including the formidable Fort St Elmo, Fort St Angelo, and Fort Ricasoli, all while discovering the stories that helped shape Malta’s maritime legacy.
Before heading back to Sliema by 5 PM, the boat will drop anchor at the idyllic Il-Ħofriet, where guests can cool off with a refreshing swim in crystal-clear waters that are close to inaccessible from land.
Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase at the boat’s bar, and while you’re soaking up the sun and stories, don’t forget to bring sunblock, a hat, and plenty of curiosity.
Tickets for adults cost €45, seniors & students pay €40, and Heritage Malta members pay €35. Children aged 7+ are welcome, with student rates applicable, and tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. The boat holds 230 passengers so you might not want to leave it too late to buy tickets, which are available at all Heritage Malta sites and online.
