8 brilliant carnival costume ideas inspired by the past year on the Maltese Islands
A biscuit, a vlogger and a Triton walk into a bar...

1. A packet of Nutella biscuits

Remember when the Maltese were SO obsessed with the newly released Nutella biscuits that all supermarkets were out of stock for a while? (Yes, that really happened). The packet may be easier to design, but if you want to get creative go all out and dress up as a single delicious biscuit! We guarantee it'll be a hit!

2. Social media queen, Sarah Zerafa

2018 was the year of Instagram darling Sosa Zerafa, and she's got an iconic look that's calling out to be made into a carnival costume. All you need to do is stick on a beret, a Marilyn wig, huge sunnies and you’re good to go! (You should also definitely ask everyone if they're hungry... and fancying a takeaway).

3. A crane, or block of flats

This one's easy to make and all the while taking a jab at the current property sitch. All you need is a rectangular cardboard cut out for the flats, and a hanging contraption over you head if you fancy being a crane! Splash on some colour and hey, presto you’re Malta’s current property scene!

4. The Tritons from Triton Fountain

This is the ultimate group costume, so if you're a trio of lads with no idea what to do this carnival, this one's for you! Ace this look and paint your whole body, sea-god style. You’ll need to perfect the pose for photos, and don’t forget the dish!

5. Anything Hurricane Dnegel related

Option1: Wrap yourself in grey fabric/cotton wool to form a hurricane and stick some plastic fish in there.

Option 2: If you're a group, dress yourselves up as awrat… if you drink too much and end up splattered on the floor, there’s more of a chance that people will pick you up. Just look at what happened in Xemxija!

Option 3: Couple costume - one person dressed as a fish, the other holding a bucket (or PAMA bag).

Option 4: Another couple costume idea – easy and funny. Just wear a pair of cow onesies and run around looking bewildered. Et voila! You're the Santa Lucija lost cows.

6. The X Factor judges

This is great for a small group of friends. Take your pick from the first edition of X Factor Malta’s judges. Group of five? No problem – just pop Ben Camille into the mix!

7. Nas Daily

Legendary vlogger Nas Daily visited our islands not once but twice this year, and even closed off his one-minute series here. The best thing about this costume is it’s SUPER comfy and recognisable - perfect for the low effort carnival goers out there!

8. Tamara Webb

Another comfy style! Get your gymwear on, stock up on Holland and Barrett goodies and some naughty treats, put in some tight braids and splash #BALANCE on your tee. YAS Queen!
