The voice behind Malta's voices has sadly passed away.
The local classical music community is mourning the loss of one of its brightest lights. Juliette Bisazza – a beloved vocal coach, mentor, and pillar of Malta’s opera scene – has passed away, leaving behind a legacy that will echo through generations of Maltese talent.
The news was shared in a touching tribute by internationally acclaimed soprano Nicola Said, one of Juliette’s many students who flourished under her guidance. In her emotional message, Nicola captured the deep admiration and affection that Juliette’s students and colleagues felt for her, writing ‘Juliette was a very kind, loving, caring, and generous woman. She treated all her students like her own children and loved each and every one of us dearly. She left a legacy that will continue to live on through her students.’
Juliette was renowned for her exceptional musicianship and perfectionism, with an unparalleled memory for music and character detail. But above all, she was known for her unwavering belief in her students, pushing them to reach new heights and develop their craft with honesty, care, and precision.
In one of their final lessons together, Nicola shared a moment that epitomised Juliette’s impact. Nicola recalls ‘Her initial weariness turned into excitement when I first sang Vissi d’arte to her. With tears in her eyes, she exclaimed: “Your voice has exploded, where has this come from?”’
As Nicola closed her tribute with a poignant line from Lucia di Lammermoor, it’s clear that Juliette’s influence will continue to shine brightly on Malta’s cultural landscape:
‘Del ciel clemente un riso la vita a noi sarà!’
(‘From heaven’s mercy, a smile will be life to us!’)
