6 things that are bound to happen this Carnival weekend in Malta & Gozo
It’s going to get wild!

Jillian Mallia

Carnival weekend is possibly the most anticipated one of the year which sees many young locals heading up to Gozo for the festivities, while families enjoy the celebrations in the capital. If you’re new to the islands, or possibly don’t remember last year’s shenanigans (hey, we’re not judging!) here’s what to expect this Carnival weekend.

1. A lot of booze #ovja

If you’re heading up to Gozo, be prepared for what you’re about to do to yourself. A boozy or partying weekend is ahead. So maybe take those Panadols with you? You know, just in case. Even better – Hangover Aid. You’re gonna need to cure that hangover one way or another!

2. Traffic galore

Oof. Plan your route carefully and ahead of time if you’re planning on crossing from Malta to Gozo some time this weekend. You wouldn’t want to be stuck in ferry queue while your friends are getting hammered.

3. Insane costumes

Maltese Carnival enthusiasts are known to be masters at creating some insanely awesome costumes that reflect pop culture in general and also our islands.

4. A jab at national current affairs

It wouldn’t be a Maltese Carnival without a Benna carton running around, a crane somewhere and some kind of Twistees ode. Who knows? Maybe this year some creatives will go as Yorgen Fenech, Benna’s Vanilla Biscuit Milkshake, or the new Prime Minister Robert Abela.

5. Artistic floats

Can we give a round of applause for all the creative peeps who spend months coming up with amazing floats for the festivities? We can't wait to see what they've come up with this year.

6. Xeba ikel, bro!

If you haven’t experienced a Maltese feast, you’re in for a treat, and if you have, you know us Maltese do it best. Maltese celebrations are inundated with savoury delights and sweet treats pertaining to the particular feast. And if you intend on partying all weekend, you’ll definitely want to down some stuff to avoid getting super sloshed.
