10 Saghtar adverts that will give '90s kids some serious nostalgia
Do you remember cutting up your Capri-Suns to exchange for prizes?

The name Saghtar is immediately familiar to anyone who’s spent time in a Maltese primary or secondary school. It was a monthly magazine published during the school year, and distributed in schools, with the aim of encouraging its young readers to read more in Maltese.

Sadly, Saghtar is no longer with us – the last print issue was published in December 2015, and it’s still uncertain whether the magazine will ever make a comeback. Still, coming across some old back issues is always a treat, especially if you pay attention to the advertisements. They’re wonderfully retro and they’re a snapshot of a different time – a time when all you had to worry about was Kinder eggs, collecting juice flaps, and winning a trip to EuroDisney. We've looked through and scanned some of our favourites, so let’s dive in!

1. These bulky PCs which were the top of the line at the time

Who would have thought that in the future, a PC could be nearly as thin as a pencil, and portable to boot?

Saghtar

2. This Coca Cola-sponsored essay competition promising the winner a visit to the newly-opened EuroDisney in Paris

Check out those sweet runner-up prizes!

3. These Kinder Egg posters, showing the whole range of toys ready to be discovered

So many crocs and frogs to collect, so little time.

Saghtar

4. These Selekta campaigns advising you to exchange flaps and packs for great gifts

Selekta may not be around anymore, but those Jurassic Park sticker albums are still squirrelled away in many a childhood bedroom.

Saghtar

5. This charming Marks and Spencer ad for children’s spring outfits

“These clothes are really cool” is questionable, but it was the '90s and we’ll give it a pass.

Saghtar

6. This peak '90s ad for Safari, featuring a pair in Lycra and purple bicycle shorts

Trends are so cyclical that these two honestly look like they've just walked out of Urban Outfitters.

7. These ads for Casiotone home electronic keyboards, including a free videotaped lesson

So many budding musicians cut their teeth at home on keyboards like this.

Saghtar

8. This Capri-Sun gift scheme where you could exchange used pouches for toys and presents

Cutting up juice boxes and pouches seems to have been the great '90s pastime.

Saghtar

9. This iconic full-colour luxury ad for Lyons Maid.

If this doesn’t immediately make you feel like summer, I don’t know you!

10. This Cadbury bonanza displaying the crème de la crème of '90s sweet treats
