You're kidding! Apartment block set to replace archaeological site in Kalkara
A farmhouse on the site was illegally demolished in February.

An 18-unit apartment block was this morning approved by the Planning Commission to replace an old farmhouse in Kalkara.

Moviment Graffiti highlighted the severity of the case by noting: "The apartments will be built on a site of archaeological value due to the presence of cart ruts, and an old carob tree will be uprooted," a Facebook post read.

Although an NGO representative present at the meeting pleaded for the site to be saved due to its historical and natural value, "her pleas went unheard, literally, since her mic was turned off by the Planning Commission towards the end of her intervention."

The post received much negative backlash from irate locals, with one person commenting: "The Planning Commission has run roughshod across the islands. We the people are appalled. Sick to our eyeballs of this crass destruction to our heritage and our environment.
Safeguard our history: our future well being depends on it."

A British woman drew parallels with a similar scenario in England: "In my UK hometown an old derelict pub was partly demolished for preparation for construction. Heavy fines have been issued, along with a preservation order and it has to rebuilt as was. How does Malta get away with destroying it's history?"

It's time to voice our anger!

When she’s not having a quarter-life crisis, Caroline is either drawing in a café, frittering her salary on sushi or swearing at traffic in full-on Gozitan. There is also the occasional daytime drink somewhere in the equation. Or two. A creative must be allowed at least one vice.
