Thanks to Storm Harry, January is shaping up to be wetter than average.
If you were hoping for calmer conditions after a wild week, winter isn’t quite done yet. Real-feel temperatures are expected to drop to around 3°C on Sunday (25th January) and again on Monday night, making it feel particularly chilly.
To top it off, strong northwesterly winds are forecast to return late on Sunday, reaching Force 8 and carrying into Monday – something to keep in mind if you were planning a weekend trip to Gozo.
On the bright side, thanks to the rain brought by Storm Harry, January is shaping up to be another wetter-than-average month, with Gozo in particular continuing to enjoy a strong rainy season.
Since 1st September, Gozo has now recorded above-average rainfall in four of the last five months, while Malta is slowly catching up, with two out of five months ending wetter than normal.
The Maltese Islands spent four days under Storm Harry’s influence, bringing a mix of isolated showers, persistent drizzle during the gale, a heavy thunderstorm with hail once winds eased, followed by more steady rain and lingering showers. All of this added up to some impressive rainfall figures across both islands.
Gozo saw widespread and consistent rainfall, with most localities recording between 45mm and 56mm during Storm Harry alone. Victoria and Għarb are now among the wettest spots overall this season, with total rainfall since September climbing past 440mm in some areas – a very healthy figure by local standards.
Rainfall in Malta varied more, but some areas were drenched. Dingli and Mġarr led the way with close to or over 70mm recorded during the storm, while several southern and central localities picked up between 40mm and 60mm. Island-wide, Storm Harry delivered an average of around 48mm, bringing the season’s total since September to just over 359mm.
