‘It honestly feels like I’m living in a movie’: Jeanette Schembri Bezzina reflects on 16-year-old message in a bottle

A message in a bottle, lost to the sea for 16 years, has returned to Malta, washing up on Marsaxlokk Beach after storms stirred the waters. Originally cast into the waves as a teenage experiment, the bottle has captured the attention and imagination of many!

Speaking to Jeanette Schembri Bezzina, one of the friends involved, seeing the bottle resurface was an almost cinematic experience.

‘I had completely forgotten about the message in the bottle, but when I saw it, the memories came back. I’ve always loved writing messages and hiding little notes, imagining that one day I might find them again, though I never really believed I would.’ she recalls.

Jeanette adds that her and her school friends were all single at the time so this ‘message in a bottle’ was not your typical love letter. The note was a symbol of their friendship. Though life has since taken them in different directions, and they haven’t met in person since, they are still connected online. And who knows, maybe this is their chance to reconnect!

Seeing the bottle again after more than a decade felt surreal to Jeanette. ‘It honestly feels like I’m living in a movie,’ she says. Inspired by films in their youth, the friends had imagined sending messages into the world to celebrate their bond. ‘The idea itself was mine, though if I remember correctly, I didn’t actually write the message’.

Reflecting on her life today, Jeanette says that back then, life felt completely different.

‘We had dreams and goals we never imagined we’d actually achieve. Yet, 16 years later, I find myself exactly where I always hoped to be, working in my dream job, married, and spending time with the family and friends I love. If I could add one line to that message, it would be ‘Dear you, yes dreams really do come true.’’

Proof that small gestures can create unforgettable moments!
