We haven’t seen anything like it in Malta in a long time.
Exactly 27 years ago today, on 25th January 1998, Malta was hit with a severe storm like no other. Hail fell hard over many localities in Malta and Gozo and lasted for around two hours.
This brought a lot of destruction over the islands causing the country to come to a complete standstill.
Cars were buried under the hail and many crops in many fields across Malta and Gozo were completely ruined.
Many even had to plough the hail off their roof, while some people in certain neighbourhoods and areas were completely stuck indoors.
It took a whopping five days until the hail melted and Malta returned to normal.
In fact, “up to 100 mm were measured in the hardest hit localities on that day”, ‘Maltese Islands Weather’ reported.
