Yellow to orange! Weather warning across Malta & Gozo escalated as gale winds intensify
Strong winds, rough seas and ferry disruptions continue today.

The weather situation across Malta and Gozo has returned to what has become a somewhat familiar scene, with the yellow wind warning issued yesterday now upgraded to orange, as gale-force winds continue to strengthen.

The Gozo Channel has warned passengers to expect delays, explaining that ferries are currently using the longer route behind Comino to gain some protection from the rough seas.

Meanwhile, the Gozo Highspeed ferry will not be operating for the entirety of today (Thursday 29th January), though services are expected to resume tomorrow if conditions allow. The same disruptions apply to Valletta ferry services serving Sliema and the Three Cities, which are also suspended today.

According to Maltese Islands Weather, winds are expected to shift to a West-Northwest direction later this afternoon, before gradually easing to Force 5–6 by the evening – offering some hope that the worst of the conditions may soon pass.

However, passengers are advised to remain cautious. Even as winds decrease, sea swell can take longer to calm, meaning ferry services may not return to normal immediately, and all should stay away from coastal areas, where possible.

Stay safe!
